SOME AIDS AND REFERENCES
Bible Aids and References
Commentaries and Bible aids are just that--commentaries. As mentioned, most are biased to the writer’s particular beliefs. This does not mean that you cannot find answers. It only means be careful and read all you can.
Creation and Archaeology
Evidence for the Bible (Creation Ministries) overviews all major archaeology finds supporting the Bible with color photos and where the works are displayed in major museums.
Christianity for Skeptics is a defense of the Bible and an unseen God. The 207 page book, beautifully illustrated, covers the major objections such as: Does God Exist? · If there is a loving God, Why Is There Evil · Is Atheism Rational? · Is the Bible the Word of God? · What about Other Religions? ·Answering the Eastern Mind ·The Challenge of Islam. There are some paragraphs that I feel have a bias, but the facts concerning why the Bible is God's Word and the defense of creation are worth reading.
DVDs on Creation CMI Ministries This organisation conveniently has many references on the same subject: creation. There are others, however. They have done a lot of good work to defend creation, but like everyone else, they are human and prone to personal biases.
Bible Translations and the Biases
Truth in Translation by Jason David Beduhn shows how personal biases influence translators. It is well-worth the read for those who believe one translation is better than another. To say the book is eye-opening is an understatement!
Study Bibles with a wealth of Information and maps included in the Bible.
These Bibles give us a lot of background information before we read each Bible book.
New Scofield Reference Bible
New International Version Study Bible
Ryrie Study Bible
Encyclopaedias that have Bible subjects from A-Z including Biographies (5-volume set)
The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia has just about every title or subject you may want to look up. Serious Bible students have more than one reference book usually, allowing a more global view of a text or doctrine. Included in these reference librairies are books other than the main-stream religions and Bible colleges. Many times the main-stream churches and study centers have been influenced by centuries of biases. Over time you will appreciate some reference books that will have tremendous value for you while others will show themselves to be of less value.
Concordances* (for specific word study)
*Sometimes concordances will have the word Hades or Gehenna, a very specific term for tomb or death translated many different ways such as tomb, hell, Hades, Gehenna, hellfire, etc. Make sure when you study you read all texts that have the original word so you can discern where a personal interpretation or a different word has been used. By covering everything, you will come to your own conclusions.
Words of Jesus only
The Greatest Words Ever Spoken by Steven K. Scott. It has 225 entries with only the words that Jesus spoke in the Gospels—nothing else.
